2/25/08 – After years of lagging, mopping, and searching for what I want to be when I grow up, I have taken the first steps. I signed up today for my EMT-1/Basic.
A brief history may be in order here.
I am the mom of 4 boys, married to a former EMT-III, Lead Medic, and Lead Fireman. Hubby left the EMT/Firefighter world behind when he left Alaska 10 years ago. We live in a tiny town in rural Maine, up in the mountains, surrounded by lakes and ski resorts. I also own a small retail shop.
Over the past few months, as our oldest son has applied to a prep school, I’ve come to ponder where I am and what I am doing. And as much as I love my little shop, I know that I need to do more. I need to do something for me, something that is independent from my family, something that will better define who I am and what I can offer.
Enter our local rescue and fire department. They are 90% volunteers, and the more I see how they love life, the more I feel comfortable in that world. Being an EMT would mean that I have a chance to help others.
I’m not idyllic, I know the downsides. Not just that I will see death, but also that I will people I know, and that I will see children. Still, the call to help is far greater than the knowledge of how horrific things can be.
For now, I will simply be journaling about my classes and training.
8/8/08 Update – As we are closing the yarn shop, I have decided to combine a few blogs into one. Saving lives and kniting socks, how cool is that?
